CODENI the only nonprofit children’s rights cooperative in
Mexico. We work primarily with child laborers in downtown
Guadalajara. Although these kids all live with their families,
they are considered “street children,” because they are forced
to work in the streets of downtown Guadalajara to cover their
basic needs. They all live in poverty—most of their homes are
in migrant communities on the outskirts of the city and lack
basic services. Unfortunately, even public education is expensive in Mexico, especially for these families whose average income is less than $10 US per day. Considering the costs of uniforms, shoes, books and supplies, a public education for one child in elementary school costs at least $200 US per year, not including daily transportation, food costs, etc. Without a sponsor, many of these children will be unable to continue attending school. With an annual donation of $300 US, you will enable one of these children to attend school for the year, by covering the costs their uniforms, books, school supplies and shoes and academic support in CODENI. Your donation will also be used to buy Christmas and birthday presents for the child, something their own families cannot afford. In September, January and shortly after his or her birthday, you will receive a card or letter from your child with a picture, thanking you and telling you how the money was spent. We provide tax-deductible receipts valid in Mexico or the United States for any donation. Sponsoring a child laborer through this program not only gives them hope for the future, it gives them a childhood today that they would otherwise never have.
